My Story
Also known as My Why!
Hi, I’m Lisa McArthur-Collins — an autistic and dyslexic children’s author from Adelaide, South Australia. I write stories that celebrate inclusion, neurodivergent minds and hidden disabilities, helping children feel seen, understood and valued for exactly who they are.
Growing up, I often felt different to the people around me. School could be challenging at times, and before I had the words to explain it, I knew my brain worked differently. Reading and spelling didn’t always come easily, and social situations could sometimes feel overwhelming.
Over time, I began to realise that the things that made me different were also some of my greatest strengths. Creativity, deep empathy and seeing the world from a different perspective became a huge part of who I am.
Becoming a mum to two autistic children deepened my passion for inclusion and representation even further. I wanted children like mine — and children like I once was — to grow up seeing themselves reflected in stories.
I believe books have the power to create understanding, spark important conversations and help children feel less alone. My hope is that my stories encourage empathy, kindness and acceptance, while reminding children that different does not mean less.
